Mr. Maglione currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Wolverine Fuels, LLC, a Coal Mining Company Headquartered in Utah, operating both longwall and continuous mining assets and employing over 1,000 people directly and approximately 4,000 indirectly.  Previously, Mr. Maglione held various positions within the Rio Tinto group, most recently serving as the Chief Financial Officer of Richards Bay Minerals in South Africa.  Mr. Maglione brings international operating, leadership, and business turn-around experience across diverse mining operations and projects, including Iron Ore, Minerals Sands and Coal with Rio Tinto.  Mr. Maglione has also spent time in precious metals as well as oil & gas with smaller public and listed public companies in the US and abroad.  Mr. Maglione holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Western Australia and a Master of Finance from the Financial Services Institute of Australasia, as well as professional qualifications from the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia and the Governance Institute of Australia.

President

Brian Somers joined the Utah Mining Association as its president in 2019. Mr. Somers has over 20 years of extensive experience in legislative affairs, strategic communications, and executive leadership. Prior to UMA, he led the Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative (USTAR) as its managing director. He also served as the deputy director of the Utah Department of Heritage & Arts, on the communications staff of Governor Gary R. Herbert, and in various strategic communications roles in the private sector.

Jared Jackson has been in the mining industry for over 20 years including surface mining, underground mining, and engineering companies. He has been with the J.R. Simplot Company for the past 13 years holding a variety of leadership and engineering roles. During his tenure at Simplot, Jackson managed the Simplot Silica Mine for 3 years and led the facility to achieve record production levels, while improving the safety culture to achieve 0 reportable injuries during the entire 3 year period. He has managed the Simplot Vernal Phosphate Mine since 2018 and led the facility to outstanding safety performance and record production levels.

1st Vice President

Josh Brown currently serves as Director of Government Affairs for Rio Tinto Americas, Rio Tinto Kennecott, and Resolution Copper.  For the past ten years, he has managed and supported Kennecott’s governmental needs for county, state and federal leaders.  Focus of work has had a strong emphasis on policy, land/water, environment, energy, and regulation.   He joined Rio Tinto in 2006 at Kennecott Utah Copper as a member of the Business Improvement team.  During that time, he has served as a manager of Business Improvement, Master Black Belt at various Rio Tinto business units, Six Sigma/Lean Instructor, and special projects leader.   Josh holds a BS in Chemical and Fuels Engineering from the University of Utah, a Master of Business Administration from Westminster College, and a certified Business Improvement Six Sigma Blackbelt.

Lisa Kirschner, Parsons Behle and Latimer

Lisa Kirschner is a leading environmental law attorney in the Intermountain West. She is recognized for her deep knowledge and experience in federal, state and local compliance obligations in a range of water quality and safe drinking water-related permitting and compliance programs. Clients include industrial, municipalities and interest groups. As a shareholder in Parsons Behle & Latimer’s Salt Lake City office, Lisa A. Kirschner concentrates her practice on environmental regulatory counseling under major federal environmental and public lands statutes with a focus on local, state, and federal water quality laws and regulations. Ms. Kirschner teams with clients to obtain, achieve compliance with and defend permits involving all aspects of water quality regulation, including surface and groundwater discharge, underground injection, municipal water supply and treatment and wetlands. She regularly negotiates favorable settlement agreements on behalf of clients faced with water quality enforcement actions at both the state and federal levels.
