Committees
Utah Mining Association Committees
Association members have the opportunity to enhance their member experience by joining standing committees. These committees focus on different aspects of the mining industry and help direct the actions of the association. Utah Mining Association members are encouraged to participate in committees and should contact our office to join.
Membership Committee
The membership committee focuses on growing Utah Mining Association membership through member recruitment and retention. Member recruitment includes identifying untapped industries to target for membership, reaching out to past members, and providing and following-up on other new member leads. Member retention includes exploring ways to enhance member benefits, communicating with current members about their experiences, and identifying additional networking opportunities.
Education & Workforce Committee
As Utah’s mining industry continues to grow, having an educated, well-trained workforce is more essential than ever. The Utah Mining Association education & workforce committee focuses on identifying gaps in workforce preparedness in order to help employers to find the skilled workers they need. This includes educating younger students across the state about the value of mining in their everyday lives through the mining ambassador program. As we educate students about mining, we hope to encourage more young people to consider a job in mining as their future career.
Health & Safety Committee
Health & Safety is the number one priority of every mining operation, and it is an essential part of the Utah Mining Association’s mission. In addition to identifying opportunities to educate members about workplace safety, the Utah Mining Association health & safety committee also hosts the annual Safety Awards, where UMA members are recognized for meeting OSHA and/or MSHA safety standards.
Environmental Committee
Mining, by its very nature, impacts the environment. However, Utah mine operators consistently go above and beyond the required national standards to minimize negative environmental impacts. The goal of the Utah Mining Association environmental committee is to not only provide members with the resources they need to continue being good environmental stewards, but also to tout the many successes of the industry in environment, social, & governance (ESG).
Legislative Committee
Advocacy often happens out of the spotlight, but the Utah Mining Association legislative committee works tirelessly throughout the year to ensure mining-friendly policies are established and protected. This involves lobbying at the local, state, and federal levels. During the Utah Legislative General Session, the legislative committee shifts into overdrive, meeting weekly with representatives from other like-minded associations. Due to limited space, participation on the legislative committee is by invitation only.
