Local Issues

Utah Mining Association (UMA) works with city and county governments to ensure that mining-friendly policies are maintained across the state. The majority of Utah’s mines are located in rural areas. Therefore, local jurisdictions play a vital role in maintaining a strong industry. UMA recognizes that mining operations (and the businesses that support them) supply family-sustaining careers and much-needed economic support to Utah’s rural communities.

State Issues

UMA is heavily involved in the legislative process. During Utah’s 45-day legislative session, UMA is at the state capitol full-time to ensure legislators are aware of how their votes may impact Utah’s mining industry. Throughout the year, we advocate for mining-friendly policies in areas such as energy development, workforce development, tax policy, environmental policy, land usage, water rights, business incentives, and more. 

Furthermore, we maintain strong relationships with state agencies and regulatory bodies to constantly advocate for our members’ specific needs. 

Federal Issues

As domestic mineral production becomes an increasing priority for the Federal Government, UMA is working to ensure our state is well positioned to meet the demand. Our staff works closely with Utah’s federal delegation, and the National Mining Association to positively influence national policy.

We also work with regulatory agencies such as MSHA, OSHA, EPA, and others  in order to advocate for reasonable policies and procedures that will advance mineral production in a safe, responsible manner.
